Kuku-Yalanji is an Australian Aboriginal language in north Queensland. It is the traditional language of the Kuku Yalanji people, having a healthy number of speakers, and that number is increasing. Although the language is deemed threatened, language use is vigorous and is learnt in schools (Wikipedia).

Kuninjku,a dialect of Bininj Gun-Wok is spoken on outstations of Maningrida on the lower Mann and Liverpool Rivers districts of western Arnhem Land. This includes places such as Mumeka, Marrkolidjban, Mankorlod, Barrihdjowkkeng, Kakodbebuldi, Kurrurldul and Yikarrakkal. There are about 400 speakers of this dialect.

According to Omniglot,, Kunjen is a Southwestern Paman language spoken on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland Australia. In 2005 there were just seven speakers of Kunjen, which is also known as Uw, Guguminjen or Kukumindjen. It is closely related to Kuuk Thaayorre. There were five dialects of Kunjen: Uw Olkola and Uw Oykangand, which were mutually intelligible; Ogh-Undjan, Kawarrangg and Athima, which differed more from Uw Olkola and Uw Oykangand.

There are approximately 2,500 Kunwinjku speakers primarly located in western Arnhem Land, including the township of Oenpelli (Gunbalanya) 320kms from Darwin.

Oenpelli (also called ‘Kunbarllanjnja‘ or ‘Gunbalanya‘) is located on the eastern border of Kakadu National Park at the base of the Arnhem Land escarpment. Kunwinjku people are part of a small minority among Australia’s indigenous peoples who still use their own languages and retain significant elements of their traditional lifestyle. These include an intense loyalty to family and clan groups and traditional kinship and marriage systems. Kunwinjku people continue to speak their own language in almost every area of their life – despite nearly a century of contact with English-speakers and only a few adults claim to speak competent English.

However the influence of ‘Balanda’ (Non-Kunwinjku) culture has lead to changes at a rate the Kunwinjku identify as too much and too fast, resulting in feelings of helplessness.

The language name is Gulumoerrgin. Larrakia is the name of the people and the old designation for the language.

Location: 

The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin region. Larrakia country runs from Cox peninsula in the west to Gunn Point in the north, Adelaide River in the east and down to the Manton Dam area southwards (Larrakia.com).

Liyagawumirr is a Yolngu language from north-east Arnhem Land which is closely related to Djambarrpuyngu. Djambarrpuyngu is the most widely spoken Yolngu language and it already has the New Testament translated. Even though Liyagawumirr is linguistically very similar, it belongs to a different clan, so the Liyagawumirr people want to translate Scriptures into their own language.

Martu Wangka is spoken by about 1,300 people in and around the Gibson and Great Sandy Desert area of Western Australia. A significant number of Martu Wangka speakers live in communities at Jigalong, Pamngurr, Punmu, Newman and Nullagine, and larger towns in the Pilbara, including Pot Hedland, Warralong and Strelley.

Martu Wangka meaning ‘Aboriginal language’ has developed from a combination of other languages, combining elements of Manyjilyjarra, Kartujarra and some Putijarra, Wamman and  Nyiyaparli.

A relatively strong and widespread language, Martu Wangka is often the first language of Aboriginal children in Western Desert communities.

Mayali as used in this translation describes a dialect of Bininj Kunwok spoken by residents of Manaburdurma town camp in Jabiru. This Mayali is different to the Mayali dialect spoken in south-west Arnhem land. In the 2021 Census, 62 people used the name Mayali to describe the language they speak.
